What Are Behavioral Skills?

Behavioral or social skills are the combination of one's ability to understand and manage his/her emotional state.  This also includes a person's ability to understand and respond to other people.

What Is The Research Saying?

According to recent research cited on Scholastic.com, “…an astonishing 62% of teachers who have been teaching in the same school for five or more years reported an increase in behaviors that interfere with teaching and learning.”

In addition, “…64% of teachers say that they need more professional development and training to meet the needs of students with behavioral issues, while 72% stated a need for more tangible school resources.”

Behavior Problems Affect Teachers And Students Alike

There are many different things that influence student behavior including parent involvement (or lack of), social issues, age, etc.   Regardless of the causes, behavior issues in classrooms are affecting students and teachers alike.

According to research cited on Publicagenda.org and Newteacher.com

  • More than 1 in 3 teachers said colleagues in their school had left because student discipline was such a challenge and the same number personally considered leaving.
  • 97% of teachers said “good discipline and behavior” were prerequisites for a successful school.
  • 82% of teachers and 74% of parents surveyed felt that parents' failure to teach their children discipline ranked as one of the biggest causes of school behavior problems.

Ten Sigma's Behavior Resources Help Improve Behavior!

We offer a 2-part system to measure and improve student behavior.  Ten Sigma Behavior Assessment Surveys make it easy for teachers, parents, and staff to identify student strengths and needs related to important behavior skills because they break the skills into understandable criterion to evaluate each skill.

Ten Sigma Rubrics are the best tool for teaching and enhancing positive and productive behavior. First, rubrics define skills in detail, so expectations are clearly defined for the student and anyone else that works with the student.  Second, using the “Teach, Reinforce, and Enforce” method with rubrics defines what students see, hear, and experience.  Over time, this consistency usually leads to adoption of the skills as part of the student's personal culture.  Lastly, students are evaluated on the same skills.  It is the consistent focus on the same set of well-designed criteria that leads to the correct and consistent performance of a skill!

If positive behaviors are taught and reinforced, the behavior of the student and/or class will reflect the desired positive behavior.   Below, you will find Ten Sigma's Behavior Resources, which are designed to assist teachers and school districts in teaching students appropriate behavior skills.
