About Targeting Transition

Targeting Transition is a comprehensive transition program that provides the materials necessary to meet the transition needs of a variety of special education students.  The program also provide the procedures necessary to meet the expectations of OSEP Indicator 13.

How the Program Works: The program provides a systematic approach to transition that includes a comprehensive set of transition skills, identifying transition needs, determining how transition needs will be met, using transition rubrics to see that needs are met, using transition activities to teach transition skills, and tracking transition progress over multiple years.

Research Base of Targeting Transition: The program draws from a wide variety of sources in selecting the skills and procedures for the program, including experts in the life and employment field, expert transition teachers and administrators, and the federal regulations under IDEA 2004.

Indicator 13 and Targeting Transition:  The program combines the procedures of the Targeting Transition program with the specific expectations of Indicator 13 so that transition teachers learn to write IEPs that both meet the transition needs of their students and the expectations of Indicator 13.

Targeting Transition Training Evaluations: Evaluations from more than 1,500 transition teachers who participated in training reveal that the program simplifies the transition process, helps organize the writing of transition IEPs, and motivates teachers to focus more on the transition needs of their students.

History of Targeting Transition:  The program began as a vocational program that focused on teaching life and employment skills to students involved in vocational courses.  As the program focused more on transition, materials and procedures were designed to meet a wider range of special education students.  Finally, the program aligned itself with the expectations of OSEP Indicator 13.
