If you’d like to receive our student strengths bonus, please visit http://tensigma.org/episode12bonus Student strengths play an important role in education and in the Transition plan. In some cases, educators, students, and parents are so focused on improving a student’s needs (which is also important) that they can easily forget to focus on maximizing their strengths. By focusing on a person’s strengths, they feel better about themselves and can make choices that align with their gifts. Based on research, focusing on the positive attributes of our students helps them inside and outside of the classroom. Some of the positive benefits of this type of focus include increased positive behaviors and learning engagement, decreased depression and aggression, and promotes living with a purpose. There are numerous types of strength assessments including: • Academic • Character Strengths • Multiple Intelligences (Learning Styles) • Functional Each of these assessment types provide opportunities to help students to recognize their gifts and improve their self-esteem. When it comes to Transition success, it is important to help students to identify their strengths and make choices based on them. By doing so, students can avoid working in jobs that don’t fit their strengths, which will ultimately lead to a more happy and fulfilled life. In addition, educators who focus on student strengths teach their students to apply that philosophy across different aspects on their lives, which is also an important lesson.
