When thinking about teaching any skill, it’s a good idea to start with identifying the key elements of that skill. For effective decision making, it is important that students are able to understand the decision being made, look at possible choices and outcomes before deciding, and carrying out the best choice. According to Psychology Today and experts at Ten Sigma, here are some top reasons on why it is important to teach students how to make effective decisions: • Helps students to move forward in their lives and not be paralyzed by past decisions • Increases self-confidence when students make positive and healthy decisions • Helps students gain the respect of people they interact with • Builds trust that is important for key areas of life such as relationships, employment, social situations, etc. Here is a step-by-step process for teaching students how to make effective decisions: 1. Interpret and understand the choices and options available to them 2. Weight their options 3. Consider the rewards and consequences of the options 4. Make a decision and create a plan to move forward 5. Evaluate the results and identify possible changes they can make in the future When teaching students about decision making, it important to talk about every day decisions they may face related to life skills, ask questions to promote thoughtful decisions, encourage students to set achievable goals, and use educational tools and resources such as a decision wheel, decision tree, or analytical rubric.
